Points to Ponder - Vanilla Ice Cream vs GM Story

Vanilla Ice Cream that puzzled General Motors!!

Never underestimate your client's complaint, no matter how funny it might seem!

* Got this from an email sent by a friend. Would love to share with all YiP! visitors.

This is a real story that happened between a customer of General Motors and its Customer Care Executive.

A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors:
"This is the second time I have written to you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night, but the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we have eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem….

You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream my car starts just fine. I want you to know I am serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds. "What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?" The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway.

The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well-educated man in a fine neighbourhood. He had managed to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and, sure enough after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start. The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night, he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.

Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And towards this end he began to take notes. He jotted down all sorts of data: time of day, types of gas uses, time to drive back and forth, etc.

In a short time he had a clue. The man took less time to buy vanilla ice cream than any other flavour. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavour, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavours were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to check out the flavour.

Now, the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. EUREKA ! Time was now the problem – not the vanilla ice cream!!! The engineer quickly came up with the answer: "vapour lock".

It was happening every night, but the extra time taken to get the other flavours allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapour lock to dissipate.

Lessons Learned:
Even crazy looking problems are sometimes real and all problems seem to be simple only when we find the solution, with cool thinking.

Parah Amarah

Sesekali aku berasa marah
Bila ketika dilanda gundah
Tapi adakah itu jalan penyudah?

Sesekali aku berasa marah
Bila rakan buatku susah
Tapi akan adakah sebuah penyudah?

Aku tak suka berasa marah
Kerana ianya bukan penyudah
Malah buatku rasa semakin parah

Kadangkala aku beralah
Untuk mengelak menjadi parah
Tapi dapat tiada diendah

Maka kini aku hanya pasrah
Biarlah nasib penentu arah
Tiada kumahu parah amarah...

Get 1,000,000 Visitors To Your Website - FREE!

How would you like to have 1,000,000 (that's ONE MILLION) people visit your website FREE OF CHARGE?!

Traffic is extremely important to any business, offline or online. Hey, imagine you open up a shop in a new area of town, in which most of the other lots are vacant... how do you think your business will be? Sure, the rent might be cheap... but you will be paying that cheap rent for a very long time before you can get some sustainable and worthwhile revenue because simply, there's very little traffic (people) who will come over to your shop and buy something!

On the other end, if you rent a lot in a busy area - you might be spending a whole lot of money paying the landlord! But hey... chances are you will be able to pay the rent quite comfortable because of the huge traffic your shop receives everyday.

Similarly, on the Internet, you need a lot of traffic to generate a profitable business. But getting web traffic is not an easy task - many resort to buying web traffic from service providers to ensure as many people as possible visit their website. Many also venture into expensive advertising campaign to promote their website.

Righfully so - without getting people to know about your product or services, how can they buy it from you even if they need it from you?

But hey....

Here's a new and FREE way to get lots and lots of traffic. I've personally tried the system and it works like a charm!

Now, if you are serious about making a profit from the Internet, you need to get these 1,000,000 people to visit your website. Click here for more information.

Remember - its FREE!

The Legendary Bruce Lee

Lee Jun Fan @ Li Xiao Long @ Bruce Lee
Bruce Lee - a familiar name especially to martial arts genre lover. One of my idol in martial arts world, and the founder of Jeet Kune Do or JKD. I am currently following the series of "The Bruce Lee Story" airing from Monday to Friday, 8.30pm on 8TV (Malaysia). Among many stories about his life, his martial art and his involvement in showbiz, what amazed me more is the mysterious story of his death. So, to those who are still wondering how and why this martial art icon pass away so young at the age of 32, I would like to share this article with you:

The Death of Bruce Lee

On the afternoon of 10th May 1973, Bruce Lee's body began to show signs of breakdown. He was dubbing some sound to the final take of Enter the Dragon at the Golden Harvest studios. The room was small, hot and without air conditioning. Bruce Lee, already in a state of exhaustion, made a visit to the bathroom and shortly after returning, he collapsed in a fit of vomiting and convulsions.

Bruce Lee was rushed to hospital and his wife, Linda, was immediately summoned to his bedside. A leading neurosurgeon, Dr Peter Woo, declared that he believed something was wrong with Bruce Lee's brain, but he wasn't sure what. Fearing that Bruce was near death, the doctor administered the drug Manitol to reduce any swelling in Bruce Lee's brain and preparations were made for surgery if this did not work. It did. Lee began to regain consciousness almost immediately. He could see and make signs of recognition, but he could not talk and it took several days for him to regain his speech.

A week later Bruce Lee was flown to Los Angeles for a complete brain and body examination. No abnormalities were found and it was suggested that Bruce Lee's collapse on May 10th was brought on by cerebral edema- an excess of fluid surrounding the brain. Although the cause of this incident could not be discerned, Bruce Lee was prescribed Dilantin- a drug which calms brain activity. The collapse left Bruce Lee shaken, but it did nothing to diminish his work rate. Indeed, he began to work even harder. Some observers have stated that it seemed as though somehow, Bruce Lee knew he was having a race against time.

The premier of Enter the Dragon was set for 10th August 1973 in Hong Kong. Bruce Lee spent the intervening time working on another film, The Game of Death. He also made plans to move back to America with his family. One day, Bruce Lee suddenly turned to Linda and said, "I'm not sure how long I can keep this up".

On 20th July 1973 Bruce Lee was at his Kowloon house discussing the script of The Game of Death with Raymond Chow. Afterwards, they drove over to the flat of Taiwanese actress, Betty Ting-Pei, who was to have a major female role in the film. Raymond Chow went home to dress for a dinner he was having that night with Bruce Lee and 007 actor George Lazenby. Chow had hoped that they could persuade Lazenby to co-star alongside Bruce in The Game of Death. Bruce Lee, meanwhile, still at Ting-Pei's flat had began to develop a headache. Ting Pei gave Bruce a tablet of Equagesic- a strong asprin based tablet prescribed to her by her doctor. At around 7:30 Bruce Lee went and lay down in a bedroom.

At 9 o'clock Raymond Chow telephoned the flat to find out why Bruce Lee had not turned up at the Restaurant. Betty Tai-Ping said she could not wake Bruce Lee. Raymond rushed to Betty's flat and found Bruce Lee in an unrousably deep sleep. A doctor was called, arrived almost immediately and spent ten minutes trying to revive Bruce Lee. By 10 o'clock an ambulance had arrived and Bruce Lee was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Raymond Chow telephoned Linda and told her to go there straight away. When Bruce Lee arrived at the hospital, doctors rushed him into intensive care and began massaging his heart. This was quickly followed by an injection of stimulatory drugs directly into the heart as well as electric shocks. It was no use. Bruce Lee was already dead. He was just thirty-two years old.

There were two funeral ceremonies. The first was in Hong Kong, where there was a traditional Buddhist service. Outside the Kowloon funeral parlour a croud of 25,000 fans wept. The second ceremony was a more private affair, held in Seatle where Bruce and Linda had met and where Bruce Lee had perhaps been at his happiest.

Bruce Lee's body was buried in the city's Lake View Cemetery. He was laid to rest wearing the traditional Chinese outfit he had worn in Enter the Dragon. The final tribute was spoken by James Coburn, "Farewell brother. It has been an honour to share this space in time with you. As a friend and as a teacher, you have brought my physical, spiritual and psychological selves together. Thank you." Bruce Lee's tombstone was simply inscribed, "Bruce Lee. Nov. 27, 1940 - July 20, 1973. Founder of Jeet Kune Do."

Almost inevitably, the untimely death of Bruce Lee was followed by wild speculation and outrageous rumours. Some claimed that the Triads had murdered Bruce Lee. Others claimed that Bruce Lee had been killed by jealous film rivals. Some claimed that Bruce Lee had been killed in a fight. There were even rumours of a drugs overdose! After a lengthy coroner's inquest in Hong Kong. A panel of medical experts eventually concluded that Bruce Lee had died from a hypersensitive reaction to a compound in the drug Equagesic. This hypersensitivity led to a swelling of the brain and resulted in Bruce Lee entering a deep sleep from which he never awoke. The coroner declared himself satisfied with the finding, and so did Linda Lee.

A few days after Bruce Lee's body had been laid to rest Enter the Dragon had its premiere in Hollywood. The film was an instant hit in the USA and soon took the rest of the world by storm. The worldwide theatrical gross for Enter the Dragon currently stands at over two hundred million dollars! Considering that the cost of making the film was relatively small, this makes Enter the Dragon one of the most profitable films of all time and certainly the most successful martial arts film of all time. Perhaps more importantly however, it helped to make Bruce Lee a legendary, semi-mythical hero who is admired and respected by many millions of people across the world.

Sekadar gurauan, tapi perlu difikirkan. Tanaman akan tetap mendapat pasaran, kerana selagi hidup kita perlu makan, tak begitu?

Smokey, or No Smokey?

Smokey? No goody!

I confess. I am a smoker. Though not a chain or heavy smoker, but still I DO smoke. And that pic shows my ciggie and ashie (cigarette & ashtray, that's what I call them). Despite all the 'tak nak' campaign, tax & price increase etc. people still smoke (including me). Why?

There are various and numerous reasons why people still smoke (or start smoking), and the list could take all the bandwith of this page. IT IS DAMN HARD TO QUIT, SO DON'T EVEN START if you haven't. Remember, DON'T EVEN START!

I started to smoke when I was reaching the legal age to smoke in Malaysia - 18 years old. Though I never smoke when I was in my boarding school like most of my friends did, but once I reached the legal age, I smoked like a pro, never choked even for the first time, with no one taught me how or influenced me to do so. An act I regret, but no point of regretting, right?

The message of this post is clear and simple. DON'T START SMOKING. No good to your health, to other people's health, and especially no good for your pocket health (and I juz wonder why am I smoking while typing this post). Am I 'born to be a smoker'? Nobody in my immedite family smokes (except for some uncles). Quit? I tried several times but failed.

Why most employers do allow their employee to smoke (at designated area of course)? Record shows that if smokers being held from getting their nicotine supply, the performance and productivity would be affected. It's proven, and nothing even a Prime Minister can do to stop it.

And why, if the government is really serious to curb the smoking habit, allows cigarette to be sold everywhere? (Beer and booze is even worse, but still...?) Of course, the industry provides tax and income that if it is put to a stop, the country could go bankrupt! That serious huh?

So, don't say smokers are useless. Without the smokers, there's no money to the country. The non-smokers will suffer too. I dare the government, if they are really serious and concern about the matter, to stop the buying and selling of cigarettes. Would they?

ETDP Preview & Print Business Workshop

* Dari kiri: Puan Tg. Irwanie, Cik Nordiana dan saya.

* Cik Diana mengendalikan Print Business Workshop.

Our Driver's Attitude

**This picture was shot today on 6.22pm at Serdang/Sri Kembangan exit, LDP before Puchong toll from Putrajaya. Click on the pic to enlarge. Anyone knows who's d Honda driver? ;)

The photo says it all. Juz an example of some of our driver's very inconsiderate attitude.
"Hey, this road is my father's, and I'm stupid too. So why do i need to queue like others?"
That might be what the queue-jumpers were thinking while they're showing their 'excellent' driving skills.

What amaze me more, sometimes these type of drivers will for sure blame you if anything bad happen, although it is obviously their fault. Is this d kind of attitude we're gonna pass to our children and generations to come? We're juz putting d tax-payer's, our money to waste by producing all d public service advertisements on road ethics etc if these act and bloody driving attitude continue to exists.

Remember, "Anda Mampu Mengubahnya."

All Muslims: Hati-hati dengan laman web 'Rakansiswa.com'

"Ringkasan mengenai Yesus
Bukti dari hidup Yesus yang boleh dipercayai
rakansiswa.com"

Hati-hatilah sebelum anda memasuki laman web berkenaan.

Sabda Rasulullah S.A.W.: "Sampaikanlah daripadaku walaupun satu ayat"

Goyah Menanti Rebah...

Why You're Not Rich?

I just read this on Yahoo! featured, and would really like to share with all visitors of this blog in case u missed it. Indeed, I strongly believe what it says is true!

10 (More) Reasons You're Not Rich

by Jeffrey Strain
Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Many people assume they aren't rich because they don't earn enough money. If I only earned a little more, I could save and invest better, they say.

The problem with that theory is they were probably making exactly the same argument before their last several raises. Becoming a millionaire has less to do with how much you make, it's how you treat money in your daily life.

The list of reasons you may not be rich doesn't end at 10. Caring what your neighbors think, not being patient, having bad habits, not having goals, not being prepared, trying to make a quick buck, relying on others to handle your money, investing in things you don't understand, being financially afraid and ignoring your finances.

Here are 10 more possible reasons you aren't rich:

You care what your car looks like: A car is a means of transportation to get from one place to another, but many people don't view it that way. Instead, they consider it a reflection of themselves and spend money every two years or so to impress others instead of driving the car for its entire useful life and investing the money saved.

You feel entitlement: If you believe you deserve to live a certain lifestyle, have certain things and spend a certain amount before you have earned to live that way, you will have to borrow money. That large chunk of debt will keep you from building wealth.

You lack diversification: There is a reason one of the oldest pieces of financial advice is to not keep all your eggs in a single basket. Having a diversified investment portfolio makes it much less likely that wealth will suddenly disappear.

You started too late: The magic of compound interest works best over long periods of time. If you find you're always saying there will be time to save and invest in a couple more years, you'll wake up one day to find retirement is just around the corner and there is still nothing in your retirement account.

You don't do what you enjoy: While your job doesn't necessarily need to be your dream job, you need to enjoy it. If you choose a job you don't like just for the money, you'll likely spend all that extra cash trying to relieve the stress of doing work you hate.

You don't like to learn: You may have assumed that once you graduated from college, there was no need to study or learn. That attitude might be enough to get you your first job or keep you employed, but it will never make you rich. A willingness to learn to improve your career and finances are essential if you want to eventually become wealthy.

You buy things you don't use: Take a look around your house, in the closets, basement, attic and garage and see if there are a lot of things you haven't used in the past year. If there are, chances are that all those things you purchased were wasted money that could have been used to increase your net worth.

You don't understand value: You buy things for any number of reasons besides the value that the purchase brings to you. This is not limited to those who feel the need to buy the most expensive items, but can also apply to those who always purchase the cheapest goods. Rarely are either the best value, and it's only when you learn to purchase good value that you have money left over to invest for your future.

Your house is too big: When you buy a house that is bigger than you can afford or need, you end up spending extra money on longer debt payments, increased taxes, higher upkeep and more things to fill it. Some people will try to argue that the increased value of the house makes it a good investment, but the truth is that unless you are willing to downgrade your living standards, which most people are not, it will never be a liquid asset or money that you can ever use and enjoy.

You fail to take advantage of opportunities: There has probably been more than one occasion where you heard about someone who has made it big and thought to yourself, "I could have thought of that." There are plenty of opportunities if you have the will and determination to keep your eyes open.

So guys and gals, it's never too late to click on this banner below, and change your life!

Kalis Cinta

** Gambar diambil menggunakan Nokia N82

Aku sedang menonton filem 'Cinta' di TV3.

Eh, macam mana raya you all semua? I had a good one with family and relatives. I hope you guys did too.

Back to 'Cinta'.

Once upon a time i was a 'hopeless romantic', like what Eizlan Yusoff said to Rashidi Ishak. But it was then. Past.

Cinta? Aku tak pasti...

Aku dapati cinta hanya mengundang duka.

Mungkin sebaiknya begitu buatku. Ok, aku nak sambung menonton. Bye.

Salam Akhir Ramadhan dan Aidil Fitri

Assalamualaikum w.b.t. dan salam sejahtera,

Yesterday, I was so relieved I got my laptop back after more than one week of its absence. The best thing is, although the warranty has expired for about a few months back, HP replaced the motherboard for free since this is the 2nd time it failed within less than a year. Though the machine I can say is not the best quality you can get on the market, but the after-sales service is among the best I've ever experienced! Alhamdulillah.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Muslims visitor of my blog a Happy Hari Raya, may this ending of Ramadhan is full of Allah's blessings to us all. Have a safe journey 'balik kampung' to those who are going to, and to those who is going to work over the holidays, don't feel sad. Your 'rezeki cuti' may come later or next year, insya-Allah. Jangan lupa balik rumah sendiri dan tempat kerja lepas raya ni udah la yer!

Wassalam.

Difference between Focusing on Problems and Focusing on Solutions

Case 1

When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found
out that the pens wouldn't work at zero gravity (ink won't flow
down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them
one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at
zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface
including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing
to over 300 degrees C.

And what did the Russians do...?? They used a pencil.

Case 2

One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was
the case of the empty soapbox, which happened in one of Japan 's
biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint
that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately
the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which
transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery
department. For some reason, one soapbox went through the
assembly line empty.

Management asked its engineers to solve the problem. Post-haste,
the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with
high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the
soapboxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not
empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they
spent a whoopee amount to do so.

But when a rank-and-file employee in a small company was posed
with the same problem, he did not get into complications of
X-rays, etc., but instead came out with another solution. He
bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the
assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soapbox passed
the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

Moral: Always look for simple solutions.

Devise the simplest possible solution that solves the problems

Always Focus on solutions & not on problems

Mobile Phones - Problem with your mobile web browser?

Recently, I was having problems with my N82 web browser. Before this, it works perfectly well, almost at par with any IE7 or Mozilla Firefox browser on a PC. Suddenly, a few days back, the web browser starts to behave weirdly and some texts or fonts doesn't appear as shown on these screencaps far below.

I almost cracked my head thinking, what went wrong? Is it because I hacked my phone so I can install any unsigned application? Or is it because I changed the product code so I can view any arabic characters on my phone? Or is it infected by virus or something?

I tried all possible methods: Scan the phone using my mobile anti-virus and also my PC anti-virus - my phone is clean. Un-hacking the phone - unsuccessful. Reinstall the phone firmware - nothing changes. I almost reset it back to the factory setting, or even worse, reformat it again, luckily i didn't, for it is gonna be a very time-consuming & tiresome process! Then, i tried to find answers by googling it on my alternative mobile browser - the Opera Mini. Wallaweh...I found the possible cause and solution HERE. And..the best thing is, it works like a charm and now everything goes back to normal...hoorayyyy....and err...Alhamdulillah!

Let me paste some of the Q&A on the discussions.europe.nokia.com website that helps me in solving the problem:

Q: I can't see some texts when i open web sites in my mobile browser . you can see the screenshot in this link : http://metalika.googlepages.com/Screenshot0002.jpg
PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!

Reply 1: Have you recently installed a Ramadan application? If so, try uninstalling it (and contact the developer for fixing it, if it is to blame).

Reply 2: yes.i installed the quran application . but when i trying to delete it ,come in screen unable to delete files . how can i delet this application???

Ahh...don't waste time! Let me jump to the answers that help me in solving the problem:

SOLUTION: You don't need to format your phone or uninstall Quran application. I had the same problem on my Nokia N95 8G and I resolved it as follow :
- from c:\windows\fonts on my PC , I copied arial.ttf,
verdana.ttf, tahoma.ttf to e:\ressource\fonts on my phone
- restart phone

Both Quran and web-Browser applications work fine.

From stupid hawkers to stupid drivers...astaghfirullah!

Today is the 8th day of Ramadhan, means it has been 8 days the Muslims had been fasting. 22 more days to go, insya-Allah.

Almost every day, I went to the Ramadhan bazaar nearby my house. Not to complaint, but I guess some of the hawkers is something like the Malays said 'melepaskan batuk di tangga'.

Why do I say so? Ye lah, kalau nak berniaga tu biarlah bersungguh. Jual makanan tu biarlah harga berpatutan, rasa pun biarlah masuk di tekak.

Mereka berniaga sate. Sedap.
Kakak dia pun cun...hehe! Gambar masa bazaar tahun lepas. Sori dik tempek sini.

Today afternoon, I rushed to my mum's place to settle a few things there. 5.30pm, rushed back home towards Cyberjaya. Mak oi...MRR2 (hiway 'mau repair 2 kali') jem tak hengat! Kalau ikut Jln Tun Razak & Sg Besi pun lagi teruk aku rasa.

Nak dijadikan cerita, selepas bayar tol RM1.30 berdekatan palace of the golden horses tu, kereta memang dah berderet. Biasala, lepas susur mines & seri kembangan baru reda tu. Ikutkan baran aku, nak je aku turun lempang je muka dia yang macam tonyok tu, tapi dia plak yg marah hon aku kuat2? Kalau dah makan babi tu, perangai pun macam babi, salah sendiri nak marah orang lain. HERAN AKU!

Buat bukan bumiputera, sama-samalah kita kongsi kuasa, kongsi kaya, jangan hanya suka nak kongsi raya. Jangan lupa asal-usul anda. Jangan cuba nak jadi kaduk naik junjung. Ingat, kami masih mampu.

Buat Bumiputera, jangan hanya diulit sukaria.
